Gifts without heart

Has the giving of a gift become a lost art?  In this world of internet shopping and gift cards are we raising thoughtless gift givers?  I’ll be the first to admit it, I put a lot of thought into giving a gift and am often disappointed in return.  I can handle it, I’m a big girl but when I see the cycle repeat with my kid, it’s a little harder to take.  I have raised a child who puts thought into giving a gift for her friends. I’m not talking about the party of a school friend, I’m referring to the friends that are always around, the ones who feel like an adopted kid.  These are the kids that we have to go to special stores for that perfect present, and she is always so excited to give that gift.  I am so proud of her for that.  Every year on her birthday these same kids give her money or a gift card, thoughtless gifts.  She’s only fourteen it doesn’t bother her yet, but I know it’s coming and there is not a damn thing I can do about it.  Are we giving gifts just to give gifts, because we’re supposed to?  I make a big percentage of my gifts, from scarves to brandy or limoncello everybody’s  happy.  I usually can’t wait to give a gift, I have to resist the urge to give it early. I can’t imagine just handing somebody a card with money or a gift card in it, the sad fact is that is becoming the new standard. When it comes to giving a gift, we as a society have lost our heart…..
