Stop, Think, Don’t Shop!

When you start your day with “if I were king of the forest” stuck in your head, how could it not be a great day?  Working on your birthday is like adding insult to injury, so I took a vacation day.  I don’t remember the last time I had five days off in a row, I am going to enjoy every second of it.

My days are definitely different when I don’t have to pay attention to the clock.  There isn’t anything that I “have” to do or anywhere that I “have”to be until next Monday.  I am hoping that I stop feeling like I’m chasing my tail, for a little while anyway.

When we were out and about today I discovered that the local mall is opening up at midnight.  I know that I have said it before but this really is ridiculous!!  It isn’t fair to the people who have to work these stores.  I briefly stood on the soapbox at my daughter’s concert last week, the one mother made a comment that had me biting my tongue.  She will be at Target at 9 o’clock to get her two things and then she was out of there.  Really?  I wanted to ask her how she would feel if she had to leave her family, so somebody could just buy two items.

Money, everything is about money.  This is not going to change on a large scale, but I do feel that on a smaller scale people are changing.  Homesteading is becoming extremely popular, more people are canning, gardening and have chickens, even in the urban areas.  People are tired of the rat race.  My BFF does 90% of her Christmas shopping online.  She gets great deals and it’s delivered to her front door. She has never given me a present that I didn’t love, and there is always something she made in the mix.

If more people stopped and really thought about a purchase before they made it, they probably wouldn’t.  I was the biggest offender of this very thing, I have put many things back on the shelf because they didn’t fall under “The Twelve.”  This is a huge challenge for me, I guess I liked buying my kids things they didn’t really want or need, that I would end up driving to Goodwill in six months.

I’ve decided on cork as my medium for the family history project.  I found 14×14 cork boards that look almost like a canvas does. I try and keep the projects functional, so people will see that you don’t have to keep your ancestors in a box. My Great Aunt was an artist so I am looking at this as a mixed media project.  I am disappointed that I couldn’t find Civil Air Patrol photos, but I am still giving her wings.  I am actually pretty excited about this now that I have decided what I am making. 🙂

About dragonflyzia

I am just a woman finally accepting that I was never meant to be in the box. I don't fit into any stereotypes, please don't try and label me, that doesn't work either. I am embracing my uniqueness in ways that are new and challenging to me, so that I may continue to grow and never stop learning.
