Facing the Cold

I went out in this weather….on purpose…temporary insanity? The fact that I have lived in this area my whole life and I am continuously surprised at the conditions of the roads, is just plain embarrassing! They were really bad!!

What drove me out of the house today…a Pinterest project. Yes I am aware of how crazy it sounds, but I needed hope damn it! Something to look at when it is so relentless outside, so I went and purchased some things to make some hope.

Did you know that most places don’t have their seeds yet? I am an instant gratification kind of girl, and I had my heart set on playing in the dirt damn it!

I went to fill up my gas tank because of the impending negative temperatures and I back tracked so I could get on the freeway, where I knew the roads were clear and decided to stop and check Kmart. I almost did a little dance in the store, because they had a whole Burpee display. Whew! What a relief and then I almost got stuck leaving their parking lot, thankfully there weren’t any cars coming. Yes it’s a lot of work to make your own hope.

The theory is that these will turn into some herbs, it all starts with some mason jars. (which I had of course) Then it’s all about the layers, first is some perlite.WP_20140126_018

The second layer is some pea stone.WP_20140126_019

Step three is organic potting soil.WP_20140126_020

Then you plant your seeds and water only to the rock line and give it only indirect sunlight. The most important part was that I got to play in the dirt today! 🙂WP_20140126_022

http://www.artisanbreadinfive.com/2010/02/09/back-to-basics-tips-and-techniques-to-create-a-great-loaf-in-5-minutes-a-day   I also made my first batch of artisan bread in five minutes a day, the house smelled amazing! (my crazy nose is fine today???) This was my first little loaf…WP_20140126_027

I love my cast iron skillets, more than one should, I’m sure. It was just me so I only grabbed a little piece of it. It was very yummy!

I have a million things that I should be doing around here instead of venturing out onto the crappy roads. Sort of like spending forty minutes scrubbing the inside of my stove that nobody ever sees, when there are all kind of things in plain site that need my attention. I never do anything normal!  The oven cleaner trick from yesterdays post worked really well on the sides and back of the oven, but I still had to really put some elbow grease into the door and the bottom. I knew that I would be putting my bread in it later so I put lemons in some water and turned the oven on for a while, to make sure that there wasn’t any cleaning smell left that could attach itself to my bread. What else is a girl to do with frozen, skinless lemons left over from making limoncello?

Here it is almost 10pm….I’m not ready for the weekend to be over yet. It is what it is and we all do what we have to, which is really hard when you’re part bear and all you want to do is sleep…..Zia
