It’s been quite the eventful weekend! Yesterday the girl and I went with Force of Nature Girl and her family to M’s Labor Day party. M has mentioned this party in the past but this is the first year she sincerely invited all of us from work.  Her husband made this incredible chicken on a spit….I wish I took a picture of that.

We all ate around the bend here at the really nice table by her front door. If I was this secluded I would rarely eat in the house. She really is in the middle of nowhere and it’s a nice piece of property. Not a single girl property so it’s out for me but I can appreciate the view. I liked the noisy little guineas as well and they eat ticks…

I was planning on making salsa when we came home from M’s but I had no idea that we would stay there so long. Force of Nature Girl’s husband was under the spell of the land. If he could move his family there he would in a heartbeat. It was a nice time but by the time I got home the girl and I only had time to do the little running around we had on our list.

This morning we got up early and headed out to SB’s for Sauce Fest 2017. I did pay more attention to our steps this year than I did last year. We used at least twenty pounds of Roma tomatoes which we pulverized in the Vitamix blender.

Some of the bigger Roma tomatoes we did  have to use the corer.

We used 1/4 pound of fresh peeled garlic and two bunches of fresh basil.

That’s pretty much our recipe….Roma tomatoes, fresh garlic, fresh basil, salt and pepper. We ended up with a tad less than last year but our sauce ended up thicker. It’s always a crap shoot when we start canning. This year we ended up with 12 quarts of sauce…aka Summer in a jar.

We also tried our hand at Bloody Mary Mix….if this ends up awesome….there is no way we are going to reproduce it. The recipe I used called for tablespoons of pickle juice. If you come across this recipe abandon at all cost.  We pulled out my juicer and followed the recipe and then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get rid of the pickle flavor.

We also tried an experiment with all of the leftover pulp from the juicer. Why couldn’t we save it an make some tomato paste?

We followed the recipe with the temperature and the time and we still ended up with this….

I took some of this and mixed it with mayo and some fresh basil and it was pretty yummy. I think we found a way to still salvage it. This was what was left of my experiment of an experiment…..

SB used her vintage Corning Ware cookie sheets for this experiment and I am in awe of these pans. No wonder they stopped making them they live forever….These are now on my Goodwill/ReStore watch list….

We really worked hard trying to save the Bloody Mary Mix…we were willing to try anything to get rid of the pickle juice taste… was too much.

We cooked this celery down and added two TBSP of brown sugar and that helped. SB’s husband and father really liked it? Maybe will we like it later? I think we may have been too in the middle of it and tasted too many times. The burn was perfect it was the beginning that we weren’t sure of….

The girl hung out with us in the beginning and the end….in the middle she was watching Star Trek Beyond with the SB’s dog…..

This was the product of our labor….

Twelve quarts of sauce and eight pints of Bloody Mary Mix. It was nice to hang out. I don’t get to hang out with SB much other than book club. Sometimes we have spurts like this month…canning….Outlander premier….city flea market…the craft show at my coffee place…and who knows what else might pop up.  Mostly we just see each other at book club, so I am happy when we have other events to hang out.

While I was at SB’s  her Father in Law stopped in and I inherited some fresh apples. It looks like tomorrow I will be canning tomato soup and apple sauce. My salsa should have cooked down enough so I should probably go so I can finish the process.

Tomorrow is a free day so who know what I might get myself into …….Zia
