Lucky Monday

There were lots of factors that made this one of the most trying Monday’s ever! I’m sure the full moon coming up on Wednesday had a hand in some of what went down. I mentioned that they let Negative Nancy go and until they replace her M has been sitting in that seat. M is even nastier to the patients and it makes for a very long day sitting next to that nasty. What specifically set me off????

We are a medical office and that is why (I have been told) that our exams are pricier than other places. When someone is cash pay we write off the cost of the refraction as a courtesy….that is how it’s done. In this case the patient was new so I quoted him $160.00 when he came in and he chose to stay. Unfortunately he checked out with M and she collected $195.00 for him. I know the guy who was with him noticed as my head whipped around and I glared at her. It’s just not right. Her response when I called her out? “Oh well…he didn’t question it so he can pay it. I am still upset over it! How do you get up and look yourself in the mirror every day when you treat people that way?? I keep saying that karma will come for her but will it really? It seems to me that the assholes of this world are the ones that are always ahead. Part of me wishes I could be one….

Shortly after that… the drama happened. It was a good practice crisis as it pointed out some areas where we failed. Although it really wasn’t a practice event…it was a lucky event. If this dude was armed it could have went down differently.

When this kid walked through the door my first thought was “there is no court today?” I knew immediately he wasn’t a patient and I did notice the shopping bag he had pressed to his side like glue. He was very polite and asked if he could use our phone because his was dead. He showed me his blank android screen wrapped in a dirty blue heavy duty case. I pointed him to the phone in the lobby that our patients use when necessary. While he was on the phone Force of Nature Girl tapped my shoulder and discreetly pointed outside.

Outside there was a small woman in a hoodie who was very upset talking to the police. Her hands were flying so fast she was bordering on flailing . Two police cars and an undercover car were out there with her. My guess was that this was all related and I told Force of Nature Girl my thoughts. Lucky for us she has a friend who works dispatch and she was able to text her the situation. The kid came back over to me and asked if I could look up the number for the bus which I did. Again, he was very polite with the pleases and thank you’s and ma’ams. My thought was “so who have you been on the phone with the last five to ten minutes if not the bus company?”

I was busy so I wasn’t paying as much attention as I should have once the kid sat down. I had to run a chart to the back after I knew the police had already pulled up. This kid had started roaming through the back of the office, probably looking for a back door. I came around the bend and swerved to miss him…I kept going because I knew help was here. If this was a true fight or flight he could have grabbed me because I wasn’t thinking. Thankfully that did not happen. The police arrested him in the back and left. We never quite recuperated from that incident all day.

We never even realized that the kid was injured until after it was over. There was blood on the front door, blood on the phone, and he was dripping blood as he walked through the back.

What the heck?  Like I said…we were lucky. It was a lot for a Monday for sure!  We didn’t leave on time either. Force of Nature Girl stayed today and she was there until 6pm.  7:45 am to 6 pm is a ridiculously long day and we worked them every Monday this summer. I left at 5:30 and ran to Goodwill. I think I might have a good base and I want to tea dye what I have but I need more layers. I will wait until after I check out Salvation Army on Wednesday. I have a skirt and a top and am only in for $3.00 so far.

I can’t believe it’s 10 o’clock already…didn’t I just get home?  It’s too much some days….Zia
