Do you remember last year when I was working on my genealogy and I was trying to get my brother to go to Kentucky with me? He threw out the suggestion “let’s go to Scotland!” He has been looking for a flight ever since. Thursday night he sent me a text…..he found an affordable flight. I would have to fly to him but round trip to Scotland for $535.00 was well worth it.
I slept on it and then tossed it around the next day. I finally decided on “if not now….when?” The flight was to Inverness so I planned my must visits from that locality. My first inquiry was to find out how to get to Aberfoyle (Stirling) from Inverness. I found a train and thought that would add to the adventure. Doon Hill and Fairy Knowe are on my “must list” for visiting Scotland. The Rev Robert Kirk who disappeared in 1692 wrote one of my favorite books on fairy lore. This was his town and I really want to visit this spot…..
There is also a wool shop in Aberfoyle that sounds very interesting. The way I read it…the town is full of quaint little shops.
I talked to my brother Friday night, because this deal had a 24 hour time limit. I was ready…I knew I could get the time off at work, I knew when the kids had finals…this was it. Then my brother started him-hawing….this was his idea! He didn’t want to do it. He was having a bad week at work and can’t think beyond a beach. It’s probably for the best, right? I don’t even have my passport yet. It was one of the things I was going to do with the year end bonus and will do when it comes next week. I’m not sure why it’s a paycheck late this time?
For about half a second I thought about going by myself….half a second. I’m not that brave…yet. There is so much to do in Scotland and looking at my “must visits” my brother would probably be bored. He had no idea of my fairy stops and I never got to tell him before he burst my bubble. Everything happens for a reason….right? Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Once I recuperated, I tossed out other suggestions in the US that had beaches. I can go on vacation and spend some time on the beach but I can’t sit there for a week. My last suggestion was Charlotte NC, there is a beach and there is history. I needed to explore and learn things, not vegetate on the beach. I can still get sun while out on a tour or walking. There are so many places I want to see and experience but not all of them have a beach. Who knows??
I know he is and has not been happy with his current job. It’s pretty hard to cheer someone up when you are on opposite ends of the country. Maybe I will find some dorky cards to send him every day…who doesn’t love mail that’s not a bill?
While I am disappointed, I did have fun making my list of places to visit in Scotland…..Zia
