The Wanderers

I had plans to get together with SB today and when she asked “do you want to go to breakfast? lunch? or just wander? I picked the wander.  I drove out to her new house which now involves driving through three roundabouts. She moved in two weeks ago and it looks like she has lived there for years. I don’t know how she does it? I walked in the door, reached down to take off my boots when her dog jumped up and licked my mouth. I did not react like Lucy when Snoopy licked her face but jeez. I got the grand tour with the furniture in place and then we exchanged presents.

Then we headed out. We had a rough idea of where our journey might lead but we weren’t sure if all the places were open. There were a lot of the little stores that weren’t open. Our first stop was the ReStore and luckily it was open and all Christmas was 90%off.  I picked up a few Christmas things but my money went to this vintage wool blanket, that I was going to buy regardless of what it said when I Googled it….

The real question is…will I leave it as is, or will I upcycle it? I know I’m not selling it. I paid $4.00 for it and I picked up some crocheted hot pads for $2.50 for 4. I spent $7.72 at this stop. There were a few places that were closed so our next stop was Goodwill. SB’s Goodwill is so much better than the one by me…so much better. I picked up 2 mens large 100% virgin wool sweaters for $3.00 a piece, a crocheted shawl that was marked as a cape for $4.00…it’s beautiful no matter what you call it, and a pair of B.O.C. booties. for $4.00

The fabric on the top of my boots is more tweed but everything else is exactly the same. There are no signs of wear except for a little dirt on the bottom. The zipper hits a little funny on the right boot which may be why they were only worn once? I also picked up a super cute velvet gypsy type shirt that SB found for me for $3.00. For being out of the thrifty game….I kicked butt today! The woman who rang me out made a comment about the wool sweaters being itchy…not after I wash them and throw them in the dryer. That’s why I always look at men’s sweaters first….more fabric.

Speaking of wool….yesterday, I did let myself be talked into going out of the house and stopped at PT’s for breakfast. Then I came home and watched YouTube like it was my job! I couldn’t figure out how to follow sites from the Firestick so I wrote them down and the Girl can help me when she gets home later tonight. I don’t know why I let my lack of sewing skills intimidate me from trying things? Some of these girls don’t sew at all…they use fabric glue. Whatever works and the point is….they are upcycling. As a world we need to STOP fast fashion…it’s out of control!

Some off the sites on my list…Thrifted transformation, Thrift Flip, Eco Fashion Sewing, love your clothes. There were more but I bounced back from your basic upcycle to wool upcycles. Some were just sweater upcycles but I have some good ideas. I found it interesting that so many people were cutting on the floor….I guess it’s not just me. The young girls I can see it but when I saw Christina McConnell on the floor I was surprised. I don’t know if I will ever be at her sewing level but it is interesting to watch.

Sunday was the other fun day this week. If you have never organized a baking party at someone else’s house….you should totally try it! The Girl and I had a blast!! I was in charge of the gluten free side of the kitchen…and the other side was for everything else.

The sugar cookies were decorated by a 41 yr old, a 28 yr old, and the Girl a 22 yr old. The Girl even said it…”it looks like preschoolers decorated these cookies. The Girl rolled the snowball cookies which were all the same size…she does not get that from me, but my mom made cookies that way. It was so much fun and it didn’t leave a mess in my kitchen.

Tomorrow is a full work day, which will be weird to work one day and be off again…but I am not complaining one tiny bit. I am lucky to have had three days off in a row. These past couple of days have been very strange from the 24hours plus of fog to the 61 degree day today. With the new moon and the eclipse….today feels more like New Years to me….Zia
