I went to SB’s today for our annual canning sauce day….aka our hot mess hootenanny! Normally I buy mine and she buys hers but I have issues with the farm I normally buy from. SB was kind enough to pick mine up from her favorite farm. Normally we each buy a 1/2 bushel but for some reason we both thought we normally use a whole bushel. 106 pounds of tomatoes and more than 12 hours later we have… 18 quarts plus 7 pints of tomato sauce, 12 half pints of roasted tomato pizza sauce, and 9 1/2 pints of salsa. We have never canned so much in one day before! It was a long day but it was a fun day.
I also spent some time taking pictures of her dog today. This is not a normally something I do so I hope the dog is okay. SB even commented on it. The dog has had cancer for awhile but has always held her own.
I’m not sure why I took so many pictures but I did. Hopefully it means nothing?
It was a great day….it was also a long day of hard work but it was still a great day. We both agreed this was a better yield of sauce than normal so if we use this many tomatoes next year….we will plan better and have the ingredients we need to make the more unique smaller batched canned items. Cooking the sauce down is the longest part for sure, it takes forever!
This was also out first time canning in SB’s new house. There were more pluses than minuses so it was a good thing. I left my half of the salsa with SB and brought home everything else. She doesn’t have the same amount of room that she did last year but it all worked out. I will get mine at book club. We technically only canned seven pints. I have one jar not canned and SB has one and a half. I will use those up this week!
A day with friend is never wasted. I’m super tired but worth it….Zia
